On March 22, 1996, a game titled "Resident Evil" (also known as "Biohazard") emerged as a chilling adventure, defying expectations of a new era in horror gaming. At the time, with the decline of 2D arcade games, CAPCOM's classic arcade masterpieces received lackluster market responses, including the once-glorious "Street Fighter" series. Producer Shinji Mikami ingeniously blended 2D backgrounds with 3D characters, captivating players' attention. This previously overlooked original game eventually became a powerhouse in the survival horror genre, selling a staggering 5.74 million copies globally.
Counting remakes and designated versions, the "Resident Evil" series boasts a total of 35 installments. The highest-selling title is the 2019 release of "Resident Evil 2 remake," reaching a milestone of 12.6 million units.
Following the release of the game "Resident Evil 3," director Paul W.S. Anderson embarked on a 15-year journey creating the live-action movie series. The film adaptation of "Resident Evil" grossed $102 million at the box office and garnered an impressive 8.1 rating on the Douban app, indicating fans' satisfaction with the adaptation. The introduction of the original character "Alice" brought a fresh perspective for gamers. Alice's striking appearance, skillful portrayal, and the laser-cutting scene of Special Forces members became iconic.
The series concluded with the release of "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" in 2017, marking the definitive end of the movie franchise, crossing 600 million RMB in box office earnings within its first three days.
Beyond games and live-action films, the "Resident Evil" series includes four full CG movies and a CG web series. "Resident Evil: Degeneration" stands as the first full-length CG movie, considered a canonical film derived from the games. Its storyline occurs seven years after the "Raccoon City Incident" from the game version of "Resident Evil 2" and a year after the events of "Resident Evil 4." The remaining three CG movies are "Resident Evil: Damnation," "Resident Evil: Vendetta," and the latest release in 2023, "Resident Evil: Death Island."
"Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" is the sole CG web series in the franchise, consisting of four episodes, debuting on Netflix on July 8, 2021.
Open Culture Entertainment is the exclusive distributor in mainland China, holding screening and merchandising rights. In October 2022, they collaborated with COCALERO, introducing a limited-edition "Resident Evil" cocktail, sparking a new wave of green-themed alcoholic beverages.
