Plot summary:

Generational writer Masakazu Isshiki (played by Masato Sakai) marries the young editor, Akiko (played by Mitsuki Takahata), who admires him a lot. Their newlywed life brims with intimacy and they return to Isshiki’s birthplace, Kamakura. Shortly after their return, Akiko is startled by the sight of a passing kappa, a river imp.

Unbeknownst to her, Kamakura has always been a city steeped in supernatural energy, where “youkai” (spirits and monsters) roam freely without inhibition. The locals, however, coexist harmoniously with these creatures, accustomed to their presence. Akiko, with her cheerful disposition, swiftly adapts to this new way of life. She embraces her husband’s eccentricities, witnesses the connections between spirits and humans, and even welcomes a deity of poverty into their home.

However, despite Akiko’s kindness, she falls victim to a youkai’s treacherous scheme. Her physical body is lost, leaving her spirit stranded in the liminal space between life and death, causing distress for Isshiki…
